Derek Burpo, Jr. earns prestigious award

After taking extra courses to raise his GPA, attending daily early morning ACT  classes raising his score over 7 points, earning an internship at a local pharmacy, interviewing and meeting other demands of the foundation, Derek Burpo, Jr. was awarded the 2020 Smith Foundation Scholarship.

The Smith Scholarship Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) Private Operating Foundation founded by Mignon C. Smith in 2005 that rewards Alabama high school seniors who have demonstrated exceptional character and community involvement despite personal challenges. The Foundation provides recipients with opportunities to pursue their educational ambitions by providing financial assistance for tuition, housing, and study away programs subject to guidelines that enhance and protect the student’s overall learning experiences. While the scholarship is a supplement last dollar scholarship, these awards can be valued up to $63,000.

However, Smith scholars are more than just names on checks—they are accountable as part of an extended scholar family. The Smith Scholarship Foundation is an adaptive support system, including full-time mentoring, professional seminars, computers, dorm packs and clothing to allow the students to focus on their education full time.

So, today we congratulate our 2020 Senior, Derek Burpo, Jr. on earning this prestigious award and scholarship!
